tell me how you got the courage of going back to Eth. I am a progressive academic with the rank of assistant professor, at the USA univ.I once contcated you while you were at Polocy institute in kenya and i was completing PhD in Public policy from the South African University. I like Ethiopia but I fear i will not be as effective as I would like to be.
Please share your thought on this.
Sincerely

Hi Solomon. sorry for being late such blogs can not open in Addis and I just happen to be in London .Initially it was diffiuclt and my main reason is I hate the outside a lot more (than you, iguess). The most diffiult for me was housing. That forced me to go to Keny and get paid in a month what AAU pays me in 2 years. That allow me to buy a house in Addis. If you are hardworking economist there is a lot of work in Addis/Africa. The AERC (aercafrica.org) is also gives research grants to keep African economists in Africa. Cheers

I am just curious to know the real professional explanation of the recent surge in cost of living in Ethiopia? Can we say we have a healthy economy that can be sustained in the face of turbulent global phenomena?

Alemayehu Geda said...

Hellow Ashenafi. There are a number of causes for the recent infatioin. The main one is, in simple words, a huge government borrowing from the domestic market (money supply or printing) following the fall in aid after the 2005 failed election. Expectation about inflation follows as the second reason. If you are interesed in detail drop me an email I will sent you my latest research on it.

Hi Alex,
How is everything going? i recently heard that we have faced an exchange rate crisis. Because of this companies like Coca cola are closing down. Is this problem the result of the financial crisis or is it something that we have been expecting to happen without the financial crisis and got worsened by it? I know that we have been running this huge trade deficit since God knows when.

Hi Bili good to hear from you. I just happen to be in Accra and saw your posts. You know those blogspots are not accessible in Addis thanks to our democratic internate! coming to the FX problem, we would have the problem even if the financial crisis was not there. it is long overdue. But the financial crisis is agagravating it. Remitance which about 2.5bln$ (1.5bl being informal) may fall by half - my estmiate; FDI and Aid may fall by at least 20% and so is export. So it is a disaster. we may have 1 month FX (about 800mln now). I am scared for the people. Hope my government is as scared as I am! I am just hoping.

Thanks Menbere for the nice words. I think the best way to do your thesis is to do 2 things: (a) work in area that you like most or an issue that puzzels you most. That way it will be a fun and work at the same time. 2nd thing to do is take courses in the first year relevant to the topic that you have in mind (even if it is in other MA/MSC programs). Collect from the web any relevant material over the year. In fact once you have identifed the topic I can also give you all materials I have. Bottowm line work hard and sleep less.

Good news form AAU Press:
The two classic works of Gebre Hiwot Baykedagne are now publisehd as 'The Gebre-Hiwot Works' by AAU press. It includes an introduction by three people, myself included. It costs just 35 Birr (watch though for the wicked street venders in Addis who erase the 3 and write 8 instead and hence 85 birr as a price - buy it instead from book stores including AAU). The book became so popular and sold out in just 3 or so weeks but the AAU is going for the second print and must be out by now. In additon, yesterday was a one day symposium organied by the AAU press on Geber-Hiwot. I would say this was one of the best academic days I have enjoyed from down to dusk during my entire stay at AAU. AAU's best and brightest were there. It was chaired by no other than Desalegne Rahameto my personal hero and role model. The symposym looked at Gebre Hiwot's work form economic, political, historical, sociological and linguistic prespective and it was just amazing and fun. The AAU is going to publish the result of that symposym according to Dr Yeraswork of Sociology dept at AAU who was coordinating the symposium. Good work AAU Press and its Director Prof. Masresha and Dr Yeras.

The Second Political Poem (quite relevant with coming of President Isayas to Ethiopia this week is:

The Orginal Song of “ My Way”
By Frank Sinatra

And now, the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friends, I'll say it clear
I'll state my case of which I'm certain
I've lived a life that's full
I traveled each and every highway
But more, much more than this
I did it my way
Regrets, I've had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption
I planned each chartered course
Each careful step along the byway
But more, much more than this
I did it my way
Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all, when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out
I faced it all and I stood tall
And did it my way
I've loved, I've laughed and cried
I've had my fill, my share of losing
And now, as tears subside
I find it all so amusing
To think I did all that
And may I say, not in a shy way
Oh, no, oh, no, not me, I did it my way
For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught
To say the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels
The record shows
I took the blows
And did it my way

Yes, it was my way

Getting a Promotion at Addis Abeba University – Lesson for the Young Staff Members
.
Some people and friends asked me about why I didn’t get a full-professorship until now and why people were calling me professor anyway. Just to make the record straight and as a lesson for the young staff members at our university, I will write nine points in relation to this.
1) I was until today associate professor at AAU. I fulfilled all the requirements for full-professorship 15 years ago. At the time the requirement was 1 book or 4 articles and teaching for 4 years as an associate professor. I gave them 6 journal articles and 1 book, published by a prestigious publisher, Palgrave Macmillan, 15 years ago and yet they denied me.
2) Since then, I got a research professorship from the University of London, the Economic Policy Research Centre at Makerere University, Kampala, and the Central Bank of Kenya. Still, despite the recognition of my work by these institutions, they denied me professorship.
3) When I was asking again 13 years ago for full-professorship, the current president of the university was an assistant professor in my department; and he was asking for associated professorship – a rank one level below me. Again, I was denied and he was given full professorship and became the university president, latter.
4) After this experience, some of the young department staff members were very angry and came to me and expressed their frustration about the injustice they witnessed. I was grateful for their moral support, but, personally, I lost interest in getting a promotion from AAU and left it there at the time.
5) Many attempts were made to make me lose hope in the university and leave the university by hiding and destroying all my employment and promotion related documents at my department, at the dean/faculty office, and at the university level (during my initial employment time I was even denied office space and salary for more than 8 months while teaching at the same time. This happened even if I came from one of the top three prestigious universities in the UK, the University of London (UoL) -lowering my salary from about 2,000 pounds per month at UoL to about 100 Pounds a month at AAU – yes! you read it right, from two thousand pounds a month to one hundred Pounds a month). I was stubborn and insisted on working and remained to teach my students which was the source of my inspiration and the greatest fulfillment for me.
6) The very latest of this effort was made some 4 years ago when a staff member that I and two external examiners failed him in his Ph.D. defense. This person was given a Ph.D. by the university despite the fact that he failed and to my surprise became my boss. Under his chairmanship again all of my documents submitted for promotion were, I was told, disappeared. Because I have gotten the professorship from many prestigious places than AAU as I noted above, I was not worried and ignored them.
7) Finally, some 3 years ago frustrated young staff members (in particular Mr. Kebede, a lecturer, Dr. Zerahyehu, the current chair of the department, and our Admin secretary Woizero Saba) took their own initiative and collected all required materials afresh and submitted it all asking full-professorship on behalf of me. This is submitted to the highest University authorities two years ago. By this time, what is required for full professorship is about 6 articles or a book or two; while I had about 60 articles and 6 books (enough for over 10 professorships, let alone one). The authorities have to sit on it again for the last two years and approved it today, and I don’t know why now.

Alemayehu Geda said...

.... Continued from the previous comment about Promotion at AAU

8) What was the reason? (i) I was not a cadre of the government all these years; (ii) I publish and also inform the public about my research results even if the result is against the government’s claimed economic success; (iii) some authorities at department, faculty, and university level are jealous of hard-working productive staff members, maybe, because they don’t.
9) So, what is the lesson for the young staff members and researchers: don’t get frustrated by events such as the above during your stay at the university; work hard and publish elsewhere and show them that you are better than them; do not lose hope and fight your way for justice, best academic environment and academic freedom, preferably in an organized form to change such unhealthy and a killer environment for the next generation. Read Berhanu Deboche’s excellent book, “Lords of Ignorance” (የድንቁርና ጌቶች), about how AAU worked in the last 30 years (and also how it works even now). It will give you the strength to change it and also the big picture.

How are you Max. Good to hear from you

Berhanu Debotch said...

Dear Prof Alemayehu, it is really sad to witness such discouraging environment in an institution that ought to be exemplary in fighting mediocrity. I personally feel sorry for not knowing about such details on an issue that I have attempted to collect data. Your perseverance however is so encouraging and exemplary for the generation. We thank you, because, you and your likes do not abandon the university and rather let it to sustain with its spirit through your works despite portentous encounters from those sheer mediocrities.
